Review of Must See Movies for 2016

CinemaPoster2016

2016 is going to be an epic year for movies!!! Or so I thought!

So for the last couple of years I’ve put out a list of movies I thought would be awesome for the following year. Yet I rarely review them afterward. So I am now. You’re welcome. I know that some of my views will not be popular, but hey, they’re mine and that’s all I can say. So I thought 2016 would be a banner year for amazing movies. I was super excited! And mostly disappointed. So, here goes. My reviews of the movies I most anticipated in 2016. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD! You’ve been warned!!!

20. Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur

kingarthur

This movie didn’t actualy release so I can’t yet give it a review. At least I think it hasn’t released!

19. Rogue One РA Star Wars Story

Rogue_One_A_Star_Wars_Story-311735553-large

Sigh… Rogue One! What a let down. I am a Huge Star Wars fan! People who know me, know that! But this movie… ugh… There was no character depth. No backstory. No setup. Nothing. The only ones I cared about were the robot and two of the secondary characters. And they all died! All of them! No one made it out! That’s just not cool. And very boring. There was none of the magic the original Star Wars movies had. No Jedi. No Lightsabers. No witty banter. It just all fell flat ūüôĀ So sad.

18. Deadpool

deadpool-promopic

I have to say in all honesty, I didn’t watch it. Why? Because my husband and kids did and even my kids who are HUGE Deadpool fans said the movie sucked. So… I didn’t see it. Too bad.

17.¬†Assassin’s Creed

assassins_creed___the_movie_by_alangoncalves-d5ckhj4

I was super excited for this movie! I went to see it and Bam! I spent the first half of the movie asking what the freak was going on! Seriously! I did not get it. Neither did my girls. Then, by the second half I was like, yeah I sort of get it. And by the end I was like, Okay the parkour and fight scenes were great, but I still don’t understand everything. I saw it a second time and it made a lot more sense but still there were things that were really vague. All in all, it was good. But they could have spent a bit more time helping those of us who haven’t played the game yet understand what the heck was going on!

16.¬†Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Miss-Peregrines-Home-for-Peculiar-Children

Tim Burton is one of my top 3 filmakers in Hollywood. However in the last 8 years or so his quality has been really iffy. So when I saw this was coming out I had high hopes, but didn’t hold my breath. And after having seen it I have to say, I liked it. I don’t think it’s Tim Burton’s Opus as others claimed. I still think Nightmare Before Christmas is the best movie he ever produced and Edward Scissorhands is a close second followed by Beetlejuice. But this was definetly a refreshing throw back to those older Tim Burton movies that I adored.

15. Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find them

fantastic-beasts-movie-poster-fan-made-1-hobbit

I went into this movie with extremely low expectations, but Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander stole my heart. He was so sweet and so genuine that his performance was oscar worthy in my opinion. The plot was okay. The graphics were great but it was Eddie that really made the movie shine. I loved his entire performance and would watch it again just because of him. The plot was predictable at best and honestly the one thing that really ruined the whole movie for me was Johny Depp at the end. I really had hoped for someone else. Just about anyone else. I’m kind of over his stale performances.

14. Jason Bourne

Jason-Bourne-character-poster

I have to be honest, I have not yet seen this one. I need to get on that.

13. The Hateful Eight

Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 1.42.55 PM

Again, I put off seeing this one. Not sure why. I just didn’t get around to it. I need to though.

12. Moana

248705

Loved it! This was a beautifully done movie. Dwayne Johnson was funny as ever. The plot was great. The visuals, the laughs, all of it. I really loved this movie. Well done Disney. This was how I had hoped the movie Brave would be, but wasn’t. This did the Polynesian people proud.

11. Independence Day

independence_day__resurgence_poster_by_sahinduezguen-d901dsm

I have to be honest, due to all the terrible reviews I could not bring myself to watch this. They were terrible, and apparently so was this movie. I just have no interest anymore.

10. Gambit

gambit-gambit-fan-poster-jpeg-24855

This one didn’t release but I still reserve the same thoughts I had before. Channing Tatum is no Gambit. I hope this one doesn’t suck.

9. Star Trek Beyond

star_trek__beyond_poster_by_sahinduezguen-d8qnd03

This one was a let down. I loved the new character Jayla but other than that, it was the same old same old predictable plot for a Star Trek Movie. Which is sad because I have loved the last 2 they did. But this one fell short for me. From Spock and his girlfirend fighting to the villian being a Star Fleet Officer to everything. Just, predictable. I hate that.

8. BFG

the_bfg_poster

Again, I didn’t see this one because the reviews weren’t good. I plan on seeing it because I loved this story as a child, but it was in and out of the theaters so fast I just didn’t get a chance.

7. The Jungle Book

movie_poster_thejunglebook2016_v2_48a08fe6

Another movie that has great visuals but lacked everywhere else. There were things about it that they did that I really did not like, especially the ending when Mougli sets everything on fire. But it was great visually.

6. Batman vs. Superman

Batman-v-Superman-Movie-Poster

This movie got a lot of flack but I personally didn’t think it was terrible. I loved Wonder Woman. Didn’t understand the weird dream sequences and thought the fight scenes were good. I even liked the acting. Except for Jessie Eisenberg as Luther. I didn’t like him at all. I am fully on Superman’s side in this one, BTW. And thought Batman was a jerk, not unlike Tony Stark in Civil War. But all in all, though it’s not a movie I’m dying to watch again, I didn’t hate it.

5. X-men: Apocalypse

x_men__apocalypse__2016____poster_by_camw1n-d91s5x4

I soooooo wanted to love this movie! I LOVE X-Men. They are one, if not my most, favorite franchise. But this one fell short. The bad guys didn’t talk. They were killed off of defeated too quickly. Their storylines were vague at best. I just didn’t really care for this one. Sorry.

4. Dr. Strange

Doctor-Strange-2016-online-subtitrat-in-romana-hd-675x1024

This was a great movie. Not an amazing movie, but a great movie. My favorite character was the cape. I had hoped for more though. I had hoped to see more magic in it and more magic graphics and training and learning but we didn’t. We got some, but not as much as I’d hoped. It was a good movie though and I’d watch it again.

3. Suicide Squad

hqdefault

Again, this was a movie that got a lot of bad reviews but I was pleasantly pleased with it. No, it is nothing like the graphic novels, but it was good. And as a romance author, I just loved the twisted Harley Quinn/Joker storyline. It was twisted and amazing. Jared Leto played the Joker like we’ve never seen him before and it was great and new and refreshing. I even liked Will Smith as Deadshot. I think a lot of the characters in the squad were under utilized, but hey, in a big squad not everyone can shine. Jsut ask Hawkeye and Black Widow.

2. Captain America: Civil War

captain_america__civil_war__2016__poster_by_krallbaki-d859ses

Best Movie Of The Year!!! This movie rocked! I saw it 5 times in the theater. Yes, it is that good. Everything about it was awesome. The fight scenes. The banter. The fight scenes. Captain America and Bucky. The cameos. All of it. Black Panther and Spiderman stole the show. I didn’t expect to like Black Panther but he was so awesome! And Spiderman was he perfect blend of goofy kid and great hero. I loved this one. Loved it!

1. Warcraft

warcraft-posterspss-01-smallwarcraft-movie-poster-durotan

I waited 10 years for an amazing Warcraft movie… and I’m still waiting. On the surface this movie was pretty good. But not great and not amazing. All of the characters were flat. They had no backstory and nothing to really tie us to them. It was rushed and there was no build with the characters, again, so we couldn’t really root for them. I feel like there were so many storylines they could have gone with and so much content out there that it should have been amazing. They could have gone the LOTR or DragonLance route with it on a epic adventure showing you all of WoW. Or they could have done a war like they did but start out showing the lands and how the Orcs were dying off and then them being called and going through the portal and everything, but again, they cut that out and didn’t do it. There was just so much they could have done to make this a real story, and they relied on the visuals instead of the storyline to carry them through. I’m kind of tired of movies doing that. All visuals, no plot.

So what do you think? Did you see these movies? Let me know. And stay tuned for the new 2017 list this week of movies I’m excited for!

Nightmare Before Christmas – Best Halloween Movie Ever!

Today is the day!! The one I look forward to all year long! Halloween!!! So Today I talk about my favorite movie of all time!

Okay, I know Nightmare Before Christmas is both a Christmas and a Halloween, but it is my favoritest¬†movie! I love it! I have a dozen Jack hats, and even more Jack shirts. My favorite PJ’s are Jack and my favorite Mug is Jack and my favorite Pen, is Jack. Jack, Jack, Jack!

So, I think Nightmare Before Christmas was the first time the name Tim Burton really stuck in my mind. I saw the movie while in college and I loved it. I have always been drawn to dark and creepy things, and this movie embodied that for me. From the mostly black and white setting to the exaggerated features of every character, I loved it. And it didn’t hurt that it took Halloween and mixed it with the other holidays as well.

Danny Elfman’s music is haunting and beautiful and his singing is both soulful and sexy.¬† Jack’s ballad at the end is one of my favorite songs ever.

So for those of you who haven’t see Nightmare Before Christmas, do it! You can watch it for free on Netflix instant streaming, or you can get it here:

21 Days of Halloween Countdown Best Odd Monster Movies

depositphotos_12959166_xl-copy

Howdy Halloween Junkies! So today I want to talk about those Halloween Monster Movies that don’t really fit into any of my other categories. The ones that I loved and were a bit scary, but were only able to fit in the Paranormal Category for horror movies.

The first is¬† a monster movie that I loved beyond loved. I think I saw this movie in the theater more than any movie I’ve ever seen in the theater. No joke. I think I saw it 9 times. Why? Because it had Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branaugh, and Helena Bonham¬†Carter. Yes, it’s the 1990’s Frankenstein. The movie was amazing! All of the actors that were attached to it were incredible. The visuals were awesome as was the storyline. I fell in love with the whole thing! I can’t say enough how much I loved this movie.

Next, isn’t really a movie that you might consider a monster movie, but I did, Sweeney Todd. You may have heard me talk about this movie in my blog post about writing villains. But I think the Tim Burton Sweeney Todd was a masterpiece. It was so artfully done. Johnny Depp gives one of the best performances of his career in that movie. He is so sympathetic that you want him to kill people! It’s amazing. He’s a monster, but you root for him anyway. Really well done. And quite gory as well.

Another monster movie I really enjoyed was Tales from the Dark Side. Yes, it was campy. Yes, it’s from the 80’s, but it was still scary fun. And Debbie Harry was awesome in it as the witch who wants to eat the little boy. There’s a lot of nostalgia in movies like that. Reminds me of when I was young.

Misery is another great horror movie. Yes, I know, it’s another one from Stephen King, but seriously, it started the stalker/ craziest fan phenomenon! I mean, she kidnaps the author and won’t let him go! And that’s the least of what she does to him. If you want to see a movie that is fraught with tension and keeps you on the edge of your seat, Misery is the movie for you!

So what kind of monsters do you like most? I have to admit, I’m not a horror movie person, but there are a bunch of movies that I don’t consider horror that I have loved.

21 Days of Halloween Countdown Ghost Movies

We are getting down to our last few posts for our 21 Days of Halloween Countdown and today we going to talk about great ghost movies. No, not Ghost the live story, but actual scary ghost stories. I think these have become the most popular paranormal movies of our time. I mean, how many Paranormal Activity movies have there been now? Those aren’t on my list. But here are some great ghost movies!

Who wasn’t thoroughly¬†creeped out and totally mind blown by Sixth Sense? That was one of the best ghost movies ever done! A boy that sees dead people? Going to a shrink to help him with his problem. That is an awesome plot. Especially with the twist at the end. So if you want to see a great ghost movie, this is it.

Next we have a ghost movie by one of the masters of Horror, and this one is super scary. The Shining. Jack Nicholson has never been crazier. And Shelly Duvall has never been more pathetic. In a good way. Take a haunted hotel, mix in a snow storm and the mind blowing madness of a writer trying to finish a book, and you are in for a real treat.

Ghostbusters. Iconic silly ghost movie that is lots of fun. And I don’t just mean the original either. The new one is just as much fun. The new one has gotten a lot of flack but I laughed so hard I cried at the new one. My kids loved it and so did a lot of my friends. They both are seriously funny movies. As long as you don’t try to compare them to each other, you’ll be fine.

Another ghost movie I loved as a kid but scared the crap out of me was Poltergeist. That clown doll was the first time I truly started getting the clown creepies. I am not a clown person. The movie was great all on its own and I was sad they tried to do a remake, though the remake didn’t do well. Poltergeist is the epitome of 80’s horror movies. It was creepy. It was endearing. It was awesome.

Beetlejuice was one of Tim Burton’s first movies and still one of his 3 best movies of all time. Michael Keeton was plain great in that movie. Gina Davis was fun and lively as ever and I even like Alec Baldwin for once. All in all, I really thought Beetlejuice was a fun ghost movie. Ghosts having to call in worse ghosts to get people out of their house? What could be better? And with all the Tim Burton flair, who in their right mind wouldn’t love it?

Now one movie that I don’t think did well, but I found super creepy was The Skeleton Key. It wasn’t an amazing movie but the premise that until you actually believe in ghosts they can’t take over your body, was certainly a new one for me. The whole movie is about trying to get a girl to believe in ghosts. It was a great twist. It really stuck with me.

House on Haunted Hill was scary and bloody and had an insane asylum. There are few places I find scarier than insane asylums. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because once you’re in there, there’s no getting out and doctors can basically use you as guinea pigs for whatever they want. And even if your family wants you out the doctors can refuse to release you. Yeah, that freaks me out. So this movie was especially scary to me. Doctors who experiment on people. Is there anything more terrifying? Maybe clowns that experiment on people. That would be worse!

So, do you like ghost movies? Or ghost stories? What is your favorite ghost movie? Tell me!

21 Days of Halloween Countdown Halloween TV Shows!

family_skeletons_watching_tv

Hello Again! It’s me! So for today’s 21 Days of Halloween Countdown I wanted to mention some great TV shows that you can either start watching, or catch up on, or continue watching to get in the Halloween Spirit.

In recent years there have been a ton of new awesome Paranormal TV shows that have come out. You can literally find just about anything between network tv, cable, Netflix and Amazon. Here are a few that are guaranteed to scare you or entertain you or both!

The Number One best Halloween style TV show to watch, and one of my person favorites, Supernatural. This show has just about everything in it! If there is a paranormal creature out there, they’ve had it on the show. If it hasn’t been on the show – It doesn’t exist. The show creators continue to come up with awesome ideas every week. And Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki¬†have some of the best brotherly chemistry you will ever find on tv.

Next, The Walking Dead. Zombies have never been so popular as they have been in this show. It has been one of the highest grossing shows in the last five year. I am constantly surprised by people who are so addicted to it. It really is a great show with an awesome ensemble cast that is constantly changing. Because, well, it’s the zombie apocalypse, people die.

An oldie, but one of the best shows around is still Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you haven’t seen Buffy you haven’t seen Joss Whedon at his earliest and some of his best! This show has it all. Teen angst. Vampires, werewolves, demons, witches, zombies, Vampire Slayers, more sexy vampires, you name it. This show is tons of fun and is still a cult classic and well worth watching over and over.

Haven is like a mix of Supernatural and Eureka. There are tons of supernatural beings with lots of different powers but they all live in the same town and there is one Super Supernatural cop who is trying to solve all the problems. But she’s stuck right in the middle with her own mystery. It’s pretty cool. And again, there are some hot guys.

Now, I liked the first few seasons of Vampire Diaries, but I got a bit bored with it when Eliana turned into a vampire. However, Originals is a whole thousand times better! I REALLY love The Originals. Elijah is the sexiest vampire out there. Seriously he’s hot! And Klaus is just my kind of crazy. Jackson is a man I could learn to love with his strong kindness. And all together, along with Rebecca and the other Michaelsons, even dear old dad, I think the family is fascinating. And very well done.

The biggie, that has also become somewhat of a cult classic is American Horror Story. These guys know how to scare people! Every season is different. Mostly the same cast but all new characters and stories. In recent seasons we are seeing how they all tie together. So we are now in our sixth season and I have seen the first five. I can honestly say that season one Murder House, was my favorite. It’s about a haunted house. Coven was my next favorite season, about witches. And HOLY CRAP Kathy Bates character in that season is the sickest person I’ve ever seen! Asylum was okay. There was a lot of things that had me scratching my head. Freakshow was a season I wanted to love so badly! But due to the second have of the season being about someone other than the freaks, I found myself only continuing to watch to find out who didn’t die in the end. Hotel was… not my cup of tea. This last season had a lot of things that were just boring to me. I got tired of seeing Lady Gaga in bed covered in blood almost naked except for pasties and underwear. I did however, like the twist they threw in the middle. And Mathew Bomer was great. All in all, if you want to be scared, American Horror Story is a great series to watch.

Lastly, The Amazon Series Hemlock Grove is a good one is you are looking for a crazy brain twist of a show. Famke Janssen and¬†Bill Skarsg√•rd are insanely good! The twists in the show are creepy and wild and will have you asking, what the heck?? And the werewolf shifting scene in season one is the grossest thing I’ve ever seen in my life! So if you want a great show, this is it.

So there ya go! Some great TV shows to get you in the mood for Halloween. Have you seen these? Do you like them? Do you have other shows you like better? Let me know so I can see them too!

21 Days of Halloween Countdown Monster Mash Up Movies

monsters-collage

Welcome back! This has been the most fun 21 Day Countdown ever!! Not only have we gotten to visit some awesome books, but also some goodies and decorations and movies as well! And today we are talking about Monster Movies. You know, the movies where they take more than one monster and compile them all together to bring a mash up of monsters into one big film. Yup! Today is Monster Mash Movie day!

Now there haven’t been a lot of these, and there haven’t been many good ones of these, but there are a few worth mentioning and watching, if for nothing else, for fun ūüôā

Saturday the 14th – This is a goofy 80’s movie that you can only get on DVD from Amazon but if you like silly 80’s movies, this is one that you should check out. Now I’ll admit I’m a wuss. And as a kid I was even more so. So, even though I’ve watched the movie over 2 dozen times, it still scared me. But, hey, it’s a fun monster mash movie with the bag costumes and dialogue the 80’s produced. So it’s worth it.

Another great and goofy 80’s movie is Monster Squad. This movie too has fun with bad dialogue and campy horror but it’s a cult classic and worth a watch. I did hear they were doing a remake of it, that would be cool to see. So if you want another family friendly monster mash movie, check out Monster Squad.

Now if you’re looking for something a little darker and a bit more up to date – Meaning from the 90’s – There’s the movie Nightbreed. This movie was only scary because of the scarecrow. I do NOT do scarecrows or clowns! But this was one of the first paranormal type movies I ever saw and I was fascinated by it. There are all different kinds of strange paranormal creatures. Though the porcupine lady is one of my favorites.

So that brings us to the 2000’s and one movie I loved, and one I liked. Van Helsing is the one I liked. The movie had a few things that I thought were cool. I liked Frankenstein’s monster. And I thought the brides of Dracula were pretty wicked as well. The graphics on the werewolves were decent. And the twist at the end was great. I liked the fight scenes as well.

Next is one that I loved. League of Extraordinary¬†Gentlemen. This movie didn’t do well in the theaters but I really enjoyed it. Much better than the graphic novel. This was the first real not goofy movie I’d ever seen that had fictional characters in it. Mina from Dracula, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekkyl, Alan Quartermaine, Invisible man, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo. Plus, a total bonus was all the great Steampunk elements. I LOVED all of Nemo’s steampunk items. So cool!

So tell me? Do you like monster mash up movies? What’s been your favorite one? Or what would you like to see done?

21 Days of Halloween Countdown- Best Witch Movies

Welcome back to 21 Days of Halloween! As with all things Halloweenish and Paranormal no countdown would be complete without Witches!

fondo-15

Dressed in black, skin of green, warts, cauldrons…or not. Witch movies have come a long way since the Wizard of Oz.

I can honestly say aside from Harry Potter, I haven’t seen a ton of witch¬†movies. I’ve seen a lot of 80’s goofy teen witch¬†movies, but not a lot of witch movies.¬† A have seen a few that I either really liked, or totally creeped me out, though.

Witches of Eastwick was a great fun movie filled with Jack Nicholson and Jack Nicholson, and well, Jack Nicholson, who needs anything else really? This classic movie was tons of fun with him seducing women and sleeping with women and having babies with women. And Susan Sarandon, Cher and Michelle Pfieffer are wonderful. I will never get over seeing the women in those huge glasses and puffy sweaters.

In 1993, Disney came out with the movie Hocus Pocus. I have always been a huge Bette Midler fan, so I wanted to see the movie and was pleasantly surprised by it. It was funny, goofy, creepy and a great Halloween movie. And I have to say, today, it is still my kids favorite. The chemistry between the ensemble cast was only outdone by the well written script. There were rumors they might remake it, but I hope they don’t. The original is classic.

In 1996 I was quite terrified by Fairuza¬†Balk in The Craft. She is seriously freaky! And the thought that a bunch of whiny, teenage girls could gain powers and harm other girls (i.e. make their hair fall out) was terrifying. You’ve seen my picture, you know what kind of hair I have! Anyway, also the part with the bugs and snake, sooooooo not my thing. ¬†All in all, I was impressed¬†and horrified by the movie and still think it remains one great witch movie.

In 1998 Sandra Bullock broke my heart when – Spoiler Alert – the love of her life was hit and killed by a car in Practical Magic. And when her screwed up sister showed up with the ever so hot Goran Visnjic, and they kill him, it took a darker twist. Enter Aidan Quinn, sigh, and you have one great movie. Crazy aunts, screwed up sisters, a family curse and a haunting ex-boyfriend and a detective who won’t let things go. And the female wicca circle toward the end, hilarious! I’ve not seen another paranormal drama with witches that has come close to it since.

Stardust wasn’t scary but it was a movie with great witches in it. I found the movie much more entertaining than the book sadly, but the book is good too. The movie though has a bit of everything. Love, fantasy, steampunk, witches, funny dead brothers, chases, sword fights, snotty girls, a young hot Daredevil and Superman. It’s got it all. A great addition to the witch collection.

Another good witch movie was the only one of its kind I’ve ever seen. The Covenant. An all male witch movie with some of my favorite hotties. Sebastian Stan, Steven Strait and Taylor Kitsch. In contract to most of the films out there, the plot on this one was good and the effects were lack luster. But I really liked it. Seeing guys wield magic as witches normally reserved for women in movies, was refreshing.

Now for the not so great. I am a sucker for Nicholas Cage. And I am a sucker for fantasy movies, or books or whatever, so I was excited for Season of The Witch in 2011. MAJOR LET DOWN! And not because of the acting. Not because of the sets. Not because of the cinematography. Because of the story. I have never seen a more slow moving, hole ridden story in my life. This movie could have been so awesome, if there had been a couple more re-writes. As a matter of fact it has spurred me to think of an off-the-wall witch idea myself. But other than that, no, I would not recommend wasting your time with this one.

So what’s left? Most recently Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters with Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke¬†Janssen. And though Jeremy Renner is totally sexy. And the guns and gadgets that Hansel and Gretel use are steampunk¬†and make me drool like a man staring at a shiny red Ferrari. But¬†the movie… didn’t make me drool. The sexual awkwardness between Hansel and Gretel is…well…weird! Like, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron weird! And the story, lacking. And mostly, just… weird. I liked the ogre, Edward,¬†a lot. He was sad and fun. Mostly though, besides Famke¬†Jensen being a great villain witch, the graphics were pretty good.

Another newish witch movie I had really high hopes for was The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel. I love Vin Diesel! My DOG is named Diesel, and yet… another lacking movie with some good graphics and predictable, flat plot. I must say, I am getting seriously tired of great graphics and no plot movies. Sigh…

So all in all. There are some great fun witch movies out there for Halloween. And there are some not great ones if you just really must see a witch movie or die!

21 Day Countdown to Halloween! Best Vampire Movies!

Welcome to the 21 Day Countdown to Halloween!!! As most of you know Halloween is my favorite Holiday Ever!!! I love nothing more than being able to decorate my house the way I wish I could on a daily basis. Dress the way I want to without being stared at and watch fun creepy movies with my kids. So the last couple of years I have done 13 day countdown and 7 day countdown, I’m working my way up to 31 day countdown! This year I’m up to 21 days! Wahoo! The next 21 days will be filled with Recipes, Reviews, Top picks and Flash Fiction! So come back every day for some Halloween Fun!

So for the first day of the countdown, let’s do one of my favorite paranormal creatures. Vampires!

How many have there been now? A million? Possibly. But there are a few awesome ones worth mentioning.

First, there is the Blade trilogy. I really liked this one, and not necessarily because I like Wesley Snipes. But I like a lot of the other actors and characters. Kris Kristofferson¬†did a kick a$$ job as Whistler! He was a ton of crotchety fun! Stephen Dorff, yeah okay, I’ll go with it, he was pretty good. But I am finding one of my most favoritest¬†actors in Blade was Donal Logue. He plays such a great bad guy. In Blade II, though I pretty much hated the plot, I loved Ron Pearlman, Norman Reedus, and Luke Goss. In Blade III: Trinity,¬†I found Ryan Reynolds and Parker Posey hilarious! And Jessica Biel as Whistler’s daughter, was awesome. I loved the opening scene with her in the subway and the fake baby. I also really liked their weapons! With each movie they went¬†a bit farther and made them even cooler.

I thought Interview with a Vampire was a great movie, despite Tom Cruise being in it. Brad Pitt is sexy and who didn’t want to just take Kirsten Dunst¬†home and give her a hug? Antonio Banderas¬†was also totally sexy and let’s be honest, Ann Rice can just plain write a great story! I found the movie to be a great portrayal of vampires living through the ages and what it would be like to live in their shoes day in and day out.

The next one I liked, is Dracula 2000. Okay, don’t look at me like that, and don’t roll your eyes either! Was the script good? Not really. Was the acting great? No. Was Gerard Butler as Dracula, totally sexy? Minimally. I liked Johnny Lee Miller, waaaaaaay¬†better! But, what I did like about this movie, was the mythos behind it. Where Dracula came from, how he came to be. That, in my humble opinion, was truly ingenious! And that was the reason I liked the movie. And no other reason. End of story, moving on now.

Dracula Untold was another vampire movie I found myself liking a lot more than I thought I would. Luke Evans made one hot Dracula! The story even stood up well surprisingly. I find most Dracula type movies to be trash, but this one was well done. I loved Charles Dance as the Master Vampire. He is so incredibly creepy. He made the perfect master. I found myself sad when the movie was over and wishing that they would make a sequel. I only had one problem with the movie, but we won’t go into that. As a new retelling of Dracula, I loved it.

So what is left? Well, I’ll tell ya! What is left, are IMO the three BEST vampire movies of all time! These I cannot put a favorite on because they all tie. I can’t decide which is the best. So here they are:

Lost Boys! Yup! The 1980 vampire movie with hot teens, blood and a scary Dad vampire! Seriously, that dude creeps me out! But who can not love Keifer Southerland and Jason Patric? Those guys were tough! And they did NOT sparkle. (Okay yes I did read those books and I did like them, but the movies sucked, no pun intended!) Keifer was a blood sucking, mind altering, psycho and he was hot. Corey Haim and Corey Feldman were a great fun addition and I will always dream to own a dog as awesome as Nanook. Lost Boys is and will always be the best pop culture vampire movie of all time. I was excited to hear they are now making a graphic novel series to go with it. I sure hope they do a good job!

Underworld. This movie is gritty, sexy, and ushered in a new era of paranormal movies that crossed both the werewolf and the vampire borders. Now, I will not say that the third more or the prequel were awesome. The third movie was awful and the prequel was just okay. But movie one and then movie two were both great, though the first will always be my favorite. There is no better, scarier or tougher female vampire than Selene. Kate Beckinsale owns that movie. And Michael Sheen is the best werewolf out there, hands down. Lucian rocks. I loved the gritty cinematography. I loved the CGI. I loved everything about this movie, except for Craven, he sucked. My favorite part of the movie though was Bill Nighy. He is one of my favorite actors and he will always be the quintessential Vampire Lord for me. This was an awesome, graphic, gritty, well done vampire/werewolf hybrid movie. Watch it.

Lastly, is the one story that started it all. Bram Stokers Dracula. Let me just say, when I saw that movie, I wanted Gary Oldman¬†to bite me right there! I was ready to stomp Keanu¬†Reeves to the ground to get at Gary Oldman! There was no comparison. Wolf form, mist form, old form, sexy steampunk¬†form, it didn’t matter to me! Okay, the old Dracula form is a stretch, but sexy steampunk¬†form for sure!¬†That was a great movie done in an amazing way, and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing-Genius! I’ve mentioned I’m a fan of his. I’m also very fond of Francis Ford Coppola. I’ve read Dracula, and the movie is pretty darn close. If I had one wish for the movie, it would have been that Dracula didn’t die. I mean, come on, who really wants him to die at the end? No one!!

So in wrap up, there are¬†scores of vampire movies, but in all of the onslaught, the best ones are the older ones. I would love for a new amazing one to come out, alas, I haven’t seen a great one in the past ten years, besides Dracula Untold. So I think the oldies but goodies prevail here. But man! We need some new ones too!

Top 20 Movie Must Sees in 2016!

CinemaPoster2016

2016 is going to be an epic year for movies!!!

I hope!

Over the past five years we have been inundated with amazing movies. From Marvel to DC to Star Wars to The Hobbit (The first and third movies only) And this next year is looking like it’s going to be just as amazing. The movies just keep getting better and more geeky, which is right up my alley.

There are so many great movies coming out I simply can’t put them in order of the ones I am most excited for, except for the Top 10. The others I just REALLY want to see! So these are my Top Twenty Must See Movies of 2016 with the Top 10¬†being ones I just cannot wait for!

20. Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur

kingarthur

It’s true that there have been a dozen different remakes of this legend in the last ten years or so and I have to admit that the King Arthur with Ioan McGruff and Clive Owen was the best I’d seen. However this new one with Charlie Hunnam looks equally as good from all of the photos on set that have been seen as of late. I am optimistic that this one will be just as good, if not better.

19. Rogue One РA Star Wars Story

Rogue_One_A_Star_Wars_Story-311735553-large

Not much is being said about this one for now except that it’s about a band of rebels in the Star Wars universe. I am cautiously hopeful that this one will be great and stay true to the Star Wars universe without going either overboard or totally off the rails. Because the Star Wars franchise has been hit or miss with me (they have a 50/50 track record right now) this one isn’t in my top ten. However I am really hoping it is going to totally rock! Especially since it has Mads Mikkelsen in it. Swoon!

18. Deadpool

This movie, like a couple others on my list have me conflicted. I had been looking forward to this movie for quite a while and I saw the trailer at San Diego Comic Con. Though I am excited for it to come out this year, I am a bit disappointed in the fact that a) it has such crass and vulgar language b) it’s the first Marvel movie to be rated “R”. Because of that, my kids will not be able to see it and they had been looking forward to it as well. Though they may be being true to the character and the story (which remains to be seen) I am saddened at the direction they decided to take with this one.

17.¬†Assassin’s Creed

assassins_creed___the_movie_by_alangoncalves-d5ckhj4

Okay let’s start with the fact that the cast for this movie is Amazing! Michael Fassbender has become a superstar in the last ten years. Along side Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Marion Collitard and more this looks like it’s going to be a hit. Added to the fact that the games are a huge success and the fact that I hope the costumes win an Oscar, I think this will be a great game turned movie adaptation.

16.¬†Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Miss-Peregrines-Home-for-Peculiar-Children

Time Burton. Those two words alone say everything. He is one of my favorite film makers along with Quentin Tarantino. And this bestselling book is not only strange, but right up Burton’s alley. I can’t wait to see it and really hope he does it justice. I’d love to see Helena Bonham Carter, but could do without Johnny Depp this time.

15. Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find them

fantastic-beasts-movie-poster-fan-made-1-hobbit

Okay this is another one on this list that I’m conflicted about. The Harry Potter series was amazing and world changing. I think JK Rowlings is an incredible talent and has changed the face of children’s literature forever. That said, they made the books into movies. They made billions of dollars off fans. They should let it be. Though I feel this may very well be a wonderful movie, I am also sick of movie companies trying to milk franchises for every last ounce of creative blood. The Hobbit didn’t need to be 3 movies. The first 3 Star Wars movies did not need to be made. Just how many sequels does Indian Jones really need? So my point is, will I see it? Yes. Am I looking forward to it? Totally. But am I sick of seeing things taken advantage of? Absolutely.

14. Jason Bourne

Jason-Bourne-character-poster

Let’s be honest. They’ve tried and tried and tried to make other actors as ex-spies as great as Matt Damon, and they just can’t. There is nothing known about the new movie except that along with Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander will be staring in the movie. And ever since I first saw her in The Royal Affair with Mads Mikklesen I have been smitten. I just love her to death. So I’m not sure what’s going to be in this movie, but I’m sure it’s going to be great.

13. The Hateful Eight

Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 1.42.55 PM

I have loved every crazy, ridiculous, well plotted, blood soaked movie that Tarantino has made. And this one is going to prove to be no exception. Stellar cast including Kurt Russell whom I haven’t seen in years and totally love. I can’t wait to be bathed in gore and over the top acting. Go see it now! This isn’t going to be a feel good movie, but it will feel good to see the movie.

12. Moana

248705

I’ve been waiting for a Hawaiian princes movie. I was on a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con this last fall and we spoke about Disney Princesses. About how over the last few years they’ve been changing from damsels in distress to women who can handle themselves. And having lived in Hawaii for a year in college and having had many Polynesian friends, I know this girl is going to be able to take care of anything thrown in her past. Especially since Dwayne Johnson is going to be at her side. And who wouldn’t feel totally safe with him having your back?

11. Independence Day

independence_day__resurgence_poster_by_sahinduezguen-d901dsm

It’s been ten years since the original came out and I am hoping that the time away from it will make it all that much better. The first was fun and action packed and ushered in a new era for sci-fi movies. I am really looking forward to this new one and hoping Liam Hemsworth and Joey King can bring us the same kind of fun loving movie that Will Smith and Randy Quaid did.

10. Gambit

gambit-gambit-fan-poster-jpeg-24855

This is another of those movies I am anxious for and conflicted about. I love Gambit. I have loved him for years. My son went as him for Halloween when he was three and in the Wolverine movie he was about the only one I liked. However, I am not a Channing Tatum fan. I have said that in a previous post about casting in movies. So as much as I am seriously looking forward to this movie. I am praying, crossing my fingers and my toes and sending positive vibes out to the MCU that they and Tatum will do Gambit justice!

9. Star Trek Beyond

star_trek__beyond_poster_by_sahinduezguen-d8qnd03

The crew is reassembling. And I’m really happy about that. The cast in the new movies is just as good as the original. And the last plot with Benedict Cumberbatch as Kahn was most impressive. Though I will miss cameos by Leonard Nemoy in this next one I am looking forward to the addition of Idris Elba. And I am hoping that Justin Lin of the Fast and the Furious franchise will do the crew the justice they deserve.

8. BFG

the_bfg_poster

My daughters have loved Roal Dahl for years. And the story of the BFG was one that I remember from when I was a girl. When I saw the trailer for the first time I got chills. Seeing with how Disney has done with Into the Woods and Maleficent I have high hopes that this one will be done well and with the best CGI available and that the plot will be both close to the book and fun with all the creepy sense of humor Dahl was known for.

7. The Jungle Book

movie_poster_thejunglebook2016_v2_48a08fe6

This is another Disney movie I am really looking forward to. Though I am again against multiple remakes of books, this one looks like it will do The Jungle Book justice. With a star studded cast and great CGI it looks like it will rank right up there with Maleficent.

6. Batman vs. Superman

Batman-v-Superman-Movie-Poster

I am really, really, really hoping this movie gives DC the turnaround it needs on the movie front. They have suffered horribly from bad franchises up till now. Green Lantern, Superman, several Batman. And though a couple of them have made quite a bit of money, between the plots and the acting each have left many wondering if DC can even make a decent movie. But this one, despite Lex Luther looking like a neurotic weasel and Batman and Superman looking like neither has a personality, has one thing that no other DC movie has had to date. Wonderwoman. Did you see the trailer? She kicks ass and well deserving of her own movie. She may very well be the one thing that makes this movie a total hit.

5. X-men: Apocalypse

x_men__apocalypse__2016____poster_by_camw1n-d91s5x4

I am really hoping this movie is awesome, but I have to admit the trailer, and the franchise in general has left me all kinds of confused. The last movie seemed to have reset everything by going back in the past. That alone is confusing. Arch Angel is alive and young, though he was live and young in the first few movies. Xavier can walk, then he can’t, then he can. It’s just all getting a bit complicated for me. Mystique keeps switching sides. Scott is here and there but nowhere is Wolverine seen. I am just hoping that this one doesn’t make things even more complicated.

4. Dr. Strange

Doctor-Strange-2016-online-subtitrat-in-romana-hd-675x1024

I have come to the conclusion that Benedict Cumberbatch is a genius. His acting skills are such that few can compete with him. Did you see the video of his VO for Smaug? Google it, it’s indescribable. He is so good at what he does. And casting him as Dr. Strange just shows us that Marvel has once again done an amazing job. I cannot wait for this one to come out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come out till November. I just hope I can make it till then.

3. Suicide Squad

hqdefault

This movie has already gotten mixed reviews. From Will Smith to Margo Robbie. It will be interesting to see what rating this movie will pull. I will be surprised if it is less than “R”. If you’ve read the comic books you know how dark and gritty they are. This is another one of the DC movies that I think might finally spur on the DC movie universe. And as my family and I are cosplaying at DC this next year, I really hope this one is as good as all the hype.

2. Captain America: Civil War

captain_america__civil_war__2016__poster_by_krallbaki-d859ses

Have you picked a side? It better be Cap’s side! I can hardly wait for this movie. Though I will miss some of the old Avengers, I am excited to see the new ones working together… well, sort of. I am sad that Quick Silver was killed off so quickly, but I’m glad we’ll see newcomers like Scarlet Witch, Vision and Falcon as well as Ant-man. Notice I’m only mention the heroes on Caps’s side. I’m also super excited to see Bucky again. I’m sad that the franchises couldn’t pull it together so Spiderman could join as well, but thus far I haven’t be overwhelmed by the Spiderman portrayals. I can say that the plot seems a bit similar to X-men, but then they are from the same makers essentially. This movie is only surpassed by one other on my list for this next year.

1. Warcraft

warcraft-posterspss-01-smallwarcraft-movie-poster-durotan

I’VE WAITED FOREVER FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!! I’ve been playing WoW for ten years. When I heard there was going to be a movie I just about died. And then I had to wait, and wait, and wait and Finally we got a trailer and then… wait some more! So THIS is my Number One Movie for 2016! I mean, how many other movies have you waited years to see? The trailers look awesome. And the entire thing looks just as awesome as the game itself.

So what do you think? Are you excited for these movies as well? Are there others you are excited about that I didn’t mention? Let me know. I’m always on the look out for upcoming movies!
