Tak watched her walk away without a backward glance at him, wondering at the unexpected pain of seeing her angry. He hadn’t exactly lied to her: communing with the gods tomorrow would require a clear head. But he couldn’t tell her about the vow; it would lose its power. He adjusted himself, trying to get comfortable again, to think about anything other than her legs spread for him in the truck.
He’d never had a problem respecting his vow before, not in the two years since he’d made it. Some part of him hoped that her quest would lead her away from him and his tribe. Every time he touched her he felt as if a little part of himself were being carved away, as if he were being slowly melded into something that he no longer understood. He couldn’t afford to lose control over his emotions, and especially not with someone like her.
What Madeleine could never understand was, he would never forget where he belonged, no matter how much he may have wanted to.

Rum and coke, easy on the ice.But I don’t usually drink.

My mom’s acorn cakes. Nobody makes them like she did.

With Madeleine. Her spirit journey in the desert was the deepest experience I’ve ever shared with anyone.

Oh, jeez. I went out with this girl once because my dad asked me to. She was looking around the restaurant the whole time and checking her phone. I never called her again.
What do you notice first in a woman?
Her ass. I mean, her eyes.
What is your biggest pet peeve with women?
Too much primping. Just come out, be yourself.

Quiet. Resourceful. Untamed.
If you could meet anyone who would it be?
Geronimo. He spent twenty-seven years of his life in captivity. On his deathbed he said he wished he should have never surrendered.
