Howdy Halloween Junkies! So today I want to talk about those Halloween Monster Movies that don’t really fit into any of my other categories. The ones that I loved and were a bit scary, but were only able to fit in the Paranormal Category for horror movies.
The first is a monster movie that I loved beyond loved. I think I saw this movie in the theater more than any movie I’ve ever seen in the theater. No joke. I think I saw it 9 times. Why? Because it had Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branaugh, and Helena Bonham Carter. Yes, it’s the 1990’s Frankenstein. The movie was amazing! All of the actors that were attached to it were incredible. The visuals were awesome as was the storyline. I fell in love with the whole thing! I can’t say enough how much I loved this movie.
Next, isn’t really a movie that you might consider a monster movie, but I did, Sweeney Todd. You may have heard me talk about this movie in my blog post about writing villains. But I think the Tim Burton Sweeney Todd was a masterpiece. It was so artfully done. Johnny Depp gives one of the best performances of his career in that movie. He is so sympathetic that you want him to kill people! It’s amazing. He’s a monster, but you root for him anyway. Really well done. And quite gory as well.
Another monster movie I really enjoyed was Tales from the Dark Side. Yes, it was campy. Yes, it’s from the 80’s, but it was still scary fun. And Debbie Harry was awesome in it as the witch who wants to eat the little boy. There’s a lot of nostalgia in movies like that. Reminds me of when I was young.
Misery is another great horror movie. Yes, I know, it’s another one from Stephen King, but seriously, it started the stalker/ craziest fan phenomenon! I mean, she kidnaps the author and won’t let him go! And that’s the least of what she does to him. If you want to see a movie that is fraught with tension and keeps you on the edge of your seat, Misery is the movie for you!
So what kind of monsters do you like most? I have to admit, I’m not a horror movie person, but there are a bunch of movies that I don’t consider horror that I have loved.
