2016 is going to be an epic year for movies!!!
I hope!
Over the past five years we have been inundated with amazing movies. From Marvel to DC to Star Wars to The Hobbit (The first and third movies only) And this next year is looking like it’s going to be just as amazing. The movies just keep getting better and more geeky, which is right up my alley.
There are so many great movies coming out I simply can’t put them in order of the ones I am most excited for, except for the Top 10. The others I just REALLY want to see! So these are my Top Twenty Must See Movies of 2016 with the Top 10 being ones I just cannot wait for!
20. Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur
It’s true that there have been a dozen different remakes of this legend in the last ten years or so and I have to admit that the King Arthur with Ioan McGruff and Clive Owen was the best I’d seen. However this new one with Charlie Hunnam looks equally as good from all of the photos on set that have been seen as of late. I am optimistic that this one will be just as good, if not better.
19. Rogue One – A Star Wars Story
Not much is being said about this one for now except that it’s about a band of rebels in the Star Wars universe. I am cautiously hopeful that this one will be great and stay true to the Star Wars universe without going either overboard or totally off the rails. Because the Star Wars franchise has been hit or miss with me (they have a 50/50 track record right now) this one isn’t in my top ten. However I am really hoping it is going to totally rock! Especially since it has Mads Mikkelsen in it. Swoon!
18. Deadpool
This movie, like a couple others on my list have me conflicted. I had been looking forward to this movie for quite a while and I saw the trailer at San Diego Comic Con. Though I am excited for it to come out this year, I am a bit disappointed in the fact that a) it has such crass and vulgar language b) it’s the first Marvel movie to be rated “R”. Because of that, my kids will not be able to see it and they had been looking forward to it as well. Though they may be being true to the character and the story (which remains to be seen) I am saddened at the direction they decided to take with this one.
17. Assassin’s Creed
Okay let’s start with the fact that the cast for this movie is Amazing! Michael Fassbender has become a superstar in the last ten years. Along side Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Marion Collitard and more this looks like it’s going to be a hit. Added to the fact that the games are a huge success and the fact that I hope the costumes win an Oscar, I think this will be a great game turned movie adaptation.
16. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Time Burton. Those two words alone say everything. He is one of my favorite film makers along with Quentin Tarantino. And this bestselling book is not only strange, but right up Burton’s alley. I can’t wait to see it and really hope he does it justice. I’d love to see Helena Bonham Carter, but could do without Johnny Depp this time.
15. Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find them
Okay this is another one on this list that I’m conflicted about. The Harry Potter series was amazing and world changing. I think JK Rowlings is an incredible talent and has changed the face of children’s literature forever. That said, they made the books into movies. They made billions of dollars off fans. They should let it be. Though I feel this may very well be a wonderful movie, I am also sick of movie companies trying to milk franchises for every last ounce of creative blood. The Hobbit didn’t need to be 3 movies. The first 3 Star Wars movies did not need to be made. Just how many sequels does Indian Jones really need? So my point is, will I see it? Yes. Am I looking forward to it? Totally. But am I sick of seeing things taken advantage of? Absolutely.
14. Jason Bourne
Let’s be honest. They’ve tried and tried and tried to make other actors as ex-spies as great as Matt Damon, and they just can’t. There is nothing known about the new movie except that along with Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander will be staring in the movie. And ever since I first saw her in The Royal Affair with Mads Mikklesen I have been smitten. I just love her to death. So I’m not sure what’s going to be in this movie, but I’m sure it’s going to be great.
13. The Hateful Eight
I have loved every crazy, ridiculous, well plotted, blood soaked movie that Tarantino has made. And this one is going to prove to be no exception. Stellar cast including Kurt Russell whom I haven’t seen in years and totally love. I can’t wait to be bathed in gore and over the top acting. Go see it now! This isn’t going to be a feel good movie, but it will feel good to see the movie.
12. Moana
I’ve been waiting for a Hawaiian princes movie. I was on a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con this last fall and we spoke about Disney Princesses. About how over the last few years they’ve been changing from damsels in distress to women who can handle themselves. And having lived in Hawaii for a year in college and having had many Polynesian friends, I know this girl is going to be able to take care of anything thrown in her past. Especially since Dwayne Johnson is going to be at her side. And who wouldn’t feel totally safe with him having your back?
11. Independence Day
It’s been ten years since the original came out and I am hoping that the time away from it will make it all that much better. The first was fun and action packed and ushered in a new era for sci-fi movies. I am really looking forward to this new one and hoping Liam Hemsworth and Joey King can bring us the same kind of fun loving movie that Will Smith and Randy Quaid did.
10. Gambit
This is another of those movies I am anxious for and conflicted about. I love Gambit. I have loved him for years. My son went as him for Halloween when he was three and in the Wolverine movie he was about the only one I liked. However, I am not a Channing Tatum fan. I have said that in a previous post about casting in movies. So as much as I am seriously looking forward to this movie. I am praying, crossing my fingers and my toes and sending positive vibes out to the MCU that they and Tatum will do Gambit justice!
9. Star Trek Beyond
The crew is reassembling. And I’m really happy about that. The cast in the new movies is just as good as the original. And the last plot with Benedict Cumberbatch as Kahn was most impressive. Though I will miss cameos by Leonard Nemoy in this next one I am looking forward to the addition of Idris Elba. And I am hoping that Justin Lin of the Fast and the Furious franchise will do the crew the justice they deserve.
8. BFG
My daughters have loved Roal Dahl for years. And the story of the BFG was one that I remember from when I was a girl. When I saw the trailer for the first time I got chills. Seeing with how Disney has done with Into the Woods and Maleficent I have high hopes that this one will be done well and with the best CGI available and that the plot will be both close to the book and fun with all the creepy sense of humor Dahl was known for.
7. The Jungle Book
This is another Disney movie I am really looking forward to. Though I am again against multiple remakes of books, this one looks like it will do The Jungle Book justice. With a star studded cast and great CGI it looks like it will rank right up there with Maleficent.
6. Batman vs. Superman
I am really, really, really hoping this movie gives DC the turnaround it needs on the movie front. They have suffered horribly from bad franchises up till now. Green Lantern, Superman, several Batman. And though a couple of them have made quite a bit of money, between the plots and the acting each have left many wondering if DC can even make a decent movie. But this one, despite Lex Luther looking like a neurotic weasel and Batman and Superman looking like neither has a personality, has one thing that no other DC movie has had to date. Wonderwoman. Did you see the trailer? She kicks ass and well deserving of her own movie. She may very well be the one thing that makes this movie a total hit.
5. X-men: Apocalypse
I am really hoping this movie is awesome, but I have to admit the trailer, and the franchise in general has left me all kinds of confused. The last movie seemed to have reset everything by going back in the past. That alone is confusing. Arch Angel is alive and young, though he was live and young in the first few movies. Xavier can walk, then he can’t, then he can. It’s just all getting a bit complicated for me. Mystique keeps switching sides. Scott is here and there but nowhere is Wolverine seen. I am just hoping that this one doesn’t make things even more complicated.
4. Dr. Strange
I have come to the conclusion that Benedict Cumberbatch is a genius. His acting skills are such that few can compete with him. Did you see the video of his VO for Smaug? Google it, it’s indescribable. He is so good at what he does. And casting him as Dr. Strange just shows us that Marvel has once again done an amazing job. I cannot wait for this one to come out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come out till November. I just hope I can make it till then.
3. Suicide Squad
This movie has already gotten mixed reviews. From Will Smith to Margo Robbie. It will be interesting to see what rating this movie will pull. I will be surprised if it is less than “R”. If you’ve read the comic books you know how dark and gritty they are. This is another one of the DC movies that I think might finally spur on the DC movie universe. And as my family and I are cosplaying at DC this next year, I really hope this one is as good as all the hype.
2. Captain America: Civil War
Have you picked a side? It better be Cap’s side! I can hardly wait for this movie. Though I will miss some of the old Avengers, I am excited to see the new ones working together… well, sort of. I am sad that Quick Silver was killed off so quickly, but I’m glad we’ll see newcomers like Scarlet Witch, Vision and Falcon as well as Ant-man. Notice I’m only mention the heroes on Caps’s side. I’m also super excited to see Bucky again. I’m sad that the franchises couldn’t pull it together so Spiderman could join as well, but thus far I haven’t be overwhelmed by the Spiderman portrayals. I can say that the plot seems a bit similar to X-men, but then they are from the same makers essentially. This movie is only surpassed by one other on my list for this next year.
1. Warcraft
I’VE WAITED FOREVER FOR THIS MOVIE!!!!! I’ve been playing WoW for ten years. When I heard there was going to be a movie I just about died. And then I had to wait, and wait, and wait and Finally we got a trailer and then… wait some more! So THIS is my Number One Movie for 2016! I mean, how many other movies have you waited years to see? The trailers look awesome. And the entire thing looks just as awesome as the game itself.
So what do you think? Are you excited for these movies as well? Are there others you are excited about that I didn’t mention? Let me know. I’m always on the look out for upcoming movies!
