So my next entry for favorite Halloween movies, I am going to do my favorite kids movies. I have already mentioned a few of my favorites. Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus are two of the best. But there are a few others I would like to mention.
Disney’s Adventure of Icabod Crane. Love it and it still totally scares me. The headless horseman is and jack-o-lantern have freaked me out since I was little. Yes, I know it’s a cartoon, but it still scares me. I have never seen cattails and other natural sounds be made so eerie as well. And Disney does a seriously good job of making scary things scary. But this one has enough fun for kids to enjoy.
I also really like Scary Godmother. Though I don’t care for the illustrations, the story is fun and the godmother is great. I love Godmother as well as the vampires. And I find the werewolf super weird but Oogie is cute and funny and I love the fact that he hates that kids are scared of him. It’s not a popular movie or book but it’s worth a watch. It was a hidden treasure we found when i got the graphic novels for my daughter to read.
Monster House was a great original story that also sufficiently freaked me out. SPOILER – A woman’s soul trapped in her house, she hates kids and tries to kill them if they get too close. There isn’t much scarier than that. It’s the first time I’ve seen an actual house embody the spirit of someone who has died and they can control the whole thing. The kids that inevitably end up inside the house were great and Steve Buscemi always does a great voice.
And no Halloween is complete till my kids watch Beetlejuice. One of the greatest ghosty movies of its time and a whole lot of Tim Burton fun! Beetlejuice has one of my favorites, Geena Davis. As well as Michael Keaton who was wonderful as Beetlejuice. I even enjoyed Winona Ryder. They have talked about doing another one. I am not sure how I feel about that. I don’t know if they’ll be able to recapture that lightning in a bottle they got last time with this one.
Sadly, Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin is not on this list because I never cared for Charlie Brown, but if your kids are young and require something more mellow, that is a good way to go. So is the awesome Disney DVD, House of Villains, which sports a collection of old Halloween Disney stories.
My newest favorite kids movie is Goosebumps with Jack Black. I think I’ve watched that movie a dozen times in the last year. It was great. Funny, creepy and based on all of R. L. Stine’s books, it inspired my kids to want to read his books. It was really well done and I thought the acting was spot on. I was super impressed. It is a new family classic for us. If you haven’t seen it, you need to. But watch out for Slappy the Dummy, he is sufficiently creepy! I am not a dummy person.
