WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR… LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!
So one of my favorite things is Holiday Movies! I love movies in general and especially holiday movies. Why? Because they remind me of my family. Every family has traditions. From watching football games after Thanksgiving to dying Easter Eggs together for Easter. And one of my family’s traditions is watching movies. Some of the old classics mostly. And a few new ones too.
Now, I know that my top ten list of Holiday Movies may not all be holiday movies, but, they are movies that I grew up watching around the holidays with my family. So they are kind of a Christmas Tradition to us.
10. Rise of the Guardians – This movie got way less praise than it deserved! This was a great movie about Christmas and finding yourself and your place in the world. Though it’s only been out for a few years this movie is a new classic and family favorite for us.
9. Santa Claus is Coming to Town – The old clamation movies and stop motion animations are some of the greatest movies out there. It’s amazing to think that it used to take days to do what they now do in minutes on a computer. I love watching these old classics. When I see them they bring back great memories of Christmases from my childhood.
8. House of Mouse – Snowed In – Again, classic cartoons. Mickey’s House of Mouse was on Disney channel for a number of years and they would play old classics during it. And Snowed in at the House of Mouse was a Christmas themed show that they played old Christmas Disney movies in. One of my favorite is Mickey’s Christmas Carol. It is really a great rendition of Scrooge. I love the Ghost of Christmas Present.
7. Rudolph – Again, another clamation that is a classic. Rudolph who runs off because of bullying and meets up with some misfits and tried to stay away from the Bumble. A great fun and classic Holiday movie for the whole family.
6. We’re No Angels – This old black and white Humphrey Bogart movie is seriously funny! Three convicts, Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov, escape prison and end up staying with a kindly merchant and his family for Christmas. It also has Basil Rathbone in it and Joan Bennett. They find themselves helping the merchant and his family out of several crisis, which is more than they bargained for. There are so many great things about this movie you just have to see it to understand. The acting is spot on and the storyline is solid.
5. Private Eyes – This Tim Conway and Don Knots movie is one of the best. Not that you can go wrong with any of their movies, but this one is hilarious. They are private investigators that are called to solve a murder, but when they get to the estate all of the suspects start to get murdered as well. As they bumble through, barely escaping death themselves, they help to solve the case, or at least narrow down the suspects. Though not really a Christmas movie, there is a surprise appearance by Santa and we watch it every Christmas.
4. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – I love this beautiful old musical. This is one of those timeless classic love stories that have all of us rooting for the hero and heroine to get together. This tough cookie leading lady may just be the reason I write feisty females myself. Another one that isn’t quite a Christmas movie, it has a great storyline and beautiful music and is great for the Christmas season.
3. Brigadoon – This one and the last one are the first two musicals my dad introduced me to, and so they will always be two of my favorites. Gene Kelly is one of my old favorites. Nice singing voice and man can he dance! This story of a man and his friend who stumble into a little town in Scotland, that isn’t on the map, and the day they spend there, is beautiful and about love that can conquer anything. Even magic and time.
2. Anything John Wayne – Seriously, anything. Joh Wayne is a hero in our house and we watch so many of his movies around the holidays. From North to Alaska to Rio Lobo to Big Jake to McLintock. They are all great. Why? Because they all have John Wayne in them. What could be better than that? In my opinion, not much.
1. Nightmare Before Christmas – This is again, a newer classic to us. This is my favorite classic Christmas movie. It combines my favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas. This is a great spooky fun Christmas movie and once again, a labor of love having used stop motion animation.
